Illinois Moment of Silence Controversy

Evidently there is a law on the books in Illinois for a moment of silence each day in public schools. Many school districts are struggling with how to do it and when will it be "appropriate" to do it. One man in neighboring Buffalo Grove Illinois is suing the state stating, "it is nothing more than prayer veiled."

My response to this controversy is what are we afraid of? The reality is that we live in a society where there is no time of reflection and there is never any silence. We are always running, always rushing and the dialogue of life is always playing.

"Quiet-tude" yes is a time of reflection. It is a time of being still and listening to the voice of God that is within you. I find in times of "quiet-tude" that I meet no one but myself. Perhaps, this is where the fear lies. Maybe, we don't want to deal with who we really are. If I continue to rush, run and always dialogue, there is never an opportunity to confront who I really am.

However, I want to be clear, I believe that it is appropiate in schools to have a moment of silence, but I want to suggest that the home is the first place of instruction, and if we have a time of prayer (aligning our selves with God) before we get to school that is far important than a school spending time in reflection.

My prayer is that we "pray without ceasing."

Please Note: My friend in Malibu (Jim) his family is safe and their home was spared. He thanks you for all of the prayers and support. In addition, my friends and family members in San Diego are all safe!
