Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a hero of mine growing up. Dr. King's life represented a life of excellence and service to God and humanity. I am always amazed at what he accomplished in such a short period of time. After graduating from Boston University with a PhD he took the historic Dexter Ave. Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL. at the age of 27. From the age of 27 to 39 he led a movement and captured the attention of the whole world and left a tremendous legacy.
Dr. King lived with a certain understanding of purpose and mission. His writings and speeches support this. In talking to the Reverend Fred Schuttlesworth, famed civil rights leader, who led the Birmingham movement. (In 1983 I drove Dr. Schuttlesworth from Ft. Knox, Kentucky to Cincinnati, Ohio and preached at his church) Dr. Schuttlesworth said that Dr. King as well as all of the civil rights leaders knew that the world was watching and they had a sense of history.
It is a shame that we only speak of these things one weekend out of a year on MLK weekend or during African-American History Month.
We have so much to learn about the commitment and the sacrifice that many made, but more importantly we can learn how to live our lives utilizing the same tools and strategies they employed.
What would happen if we all truly tapped into the fullness of purpose and lived with a sense of urgency? Can we imagine the impact we would make on the world.
What if we declared the next twelve years of my life will be my most productive? We could literally transform the world!
Living with Faith and Power and Creating a Phenomenal Life!
