"The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe" (Proverbs 18:10).
Have we embraced the name of the Lord? What does this mean? This is not just about the invocation of His name, but it is about embracing the Truth of all that He is. A tower in antiquity was the place of refuge, it was a place that was far above the attack of the enemy, it was a place that the lookouts could see for miles any attacks that would be on the horizon, it was well fortified and secure. For the people of the a city it was their Salvation.
God is our place of security and our refuge. God is our place of strength and protection high above the fray of life. He is our Salvation.
In our time, there are so many people that are hurting. When I share hurting I am not meaning that they walk around with a look of despair and they are distraught; but in the terms of Thoreau who shared, "the masses of men lead lives of quiet desperation." That is that we may have an outer shell of prosperity and abundance, a facade that everything is together, but the reality of the fact is that are lives are empty and we grapple with significance. Have you ever wondered why we try to achieve all of the praises and accolades? Have you ever worked for something and then after earning and achieving it, it is hollow and empty? Have you wondered why the new house, new car, promotion, new job, new wife, new husband, new relationship, all turn out after a while to be OK, but never at the point of real satisfaction?
Many will rationalize their lives and say this is what life is all about and to say it is alright to live with this kind of emptiness and pain. Even those in the church will rationalize and say that my life is where it is because of God. This is NOT what LIVING or CHRISTIANITY is all about! Jesus shared, "I have come that you might have life and have life abundantly" (Gospel of John 10:10 b). Life is defined as a life that is enriched, fulfilled, meaningful and purposeful. One translator called it a "God kind of life". We can never be fulfilled until we embrace life that God provided through Jesus.
We have lived our lives a part from God. Many even in the church have lived their lives by their own design and desire and not surrendered to the Lordship of the Father through Jesus. If the Father is not at the center of our lives, we err and are separated from the Father. Sin is anything that takes our heart, devotion, allegiance and loyalty from the Father. In other words any thing that we place before God in our lives. My Grandfather shared, "our lives should be like that of the planets of the solar system, everything that we do should evolve and revolve around the sun. Jesus is the center of our world and universe. Everything that we do should evolve and revolve around him." When our lives do not revolve around him, we sin. Jesus stated, "seek first the kingdom of God and it's righteousness..." (Gospel of John 6:33).
I believe that is why Paul shared at best, "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God..." because, there is a natural pull for us to take charge and control of our lives, instead of the surrender of our lives to God.
I write this to people that are in the church, when will we ever get beyond the point of infusing our egos and not surrendering unto the Lordship of Jesus? When will we ever get to the point it is not in simply acting a role of being a Christian, but it is embracing this wonderful life. When will we get to the point when we recognize that we are missing the whole point? John the Baptist said it so well, "I must decrease and he must increase..." We must diminish the ego and allow the New Birth to transform and change our hearts, and minds.
Let me be very clear, there can be for fulfillment a part of Christ! If I have been in the church and still have not embraced the fulfillment of Christ, I recommend seeking Him and developing a relationship with the Father.
The truth of life, fulfillment, peace, joy and significance that we seek can only come through a relationship with the Father through Jesus.
That is what the writer of Proverbs was sharing, those that run to the strong tower are safe--they are saved!
Have we truly accepted the fullness of the Father in a relationship through Christ Jesus?
