"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it" (Proverbs 22:6).
The religious and spiritual education of our children is the parent's responsibility. We live in an age where of political correctness and where we allow children to make choices about things that they have no foundation. Many forget they are the parent and that they have the responsibility to care for their children in every area of life.
The single most important responsibility that we have as parents is to pass on our faith and the relationship that we have God through Jesus the Christ. Just as the social mandates of taking care of the physical and the material needs, God has a mandate that we educate our children in the things of God. It is amazing to me that many would never neglect or abuse their children physically, but in terms of spiritually they abuse and hinder their lives by not providing a spiritual foundation for them.
Let me be clear, just as the secular education of our children does not begin at an outside institution, it is the same with a religious education. A child learns about God in the lives of their parents and family as a major part of their lives. They learn to love God because they see their parents in love with God; they learn to pray, because they see their parents pray; they develop a hunger and a thirst for righteousness, because they see their parents with a hunger and thirst.
I am blessed to have exceptionally bright children who will make a tremendous mark on the world at large. However, I am very clear, that in spite of all of the academic success that they are demonstrating, if they have no spiritual foundation I am not providing them what they really need to grow and develop as a human being on this planet with a God given purpose.
One of the greatest gifts my parents gave me was the introduction to God and the religious education I got in church. This has been the single most defining aspect of my life, and has been the most consistent aspect of my life.
Parents, it is your spiritual obligation to train your child in the things of God.
