"By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures" (Proverbs 24:3-4).
One popular songwriter of yester year sang, "a house is not a home". The writer of Proverbs shares the importance of how a house is developed in being a home. One familiar scripture comes to mind, "Unless the Lord build the house, we labor in vain..." It is important that the foundation of any home is the spiritual foundation of Christ. When I share the spiritual foundation, it is important that those who live in the house have received the New Birth experience and understand that the principles and the Word of God are the primary references for the family.
Joshua, in the Old Testament, was very clear, "for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!" A home is a place where the Lord is served and honored in the lives of the family. When we build our homes on the foundation of Christ, we invite the Holy Spirit to permeate the dwelling. The Holy Spirit sets the tone and creates a vibe of creative energy and spirit.
The writer of Proverbs gives us the ingredients of a spiritual home, wisdom, understanding and knowledge. All of these ingredients presupposes love. The Source of all of these traits is God. God has to be the Source of our homes and He must be invited into our homes. Notice, that these traits are not just about having a spiritual presence in the home, it is also about how we interact with those within the household. Can you imagine if everyone within our household operated within wisdom? Can you imagine how decision making would look? Can you imagine the household budget? What if everyone in the home operated from a perspective of understanding? Where family members, truly walked in understanding of one another? I would imagine that the divorce rate would decrease and children would feel less alienated. Can you imagine how the household would look if everyone operated from the premise of knowledge?
Isn't amazing that you can have a beautiful, palatial home filled with wonderful treasures from all over the world; but if God is not at the center of your home, it is just a dwelling place.
