Dealing with Your Enemies

"If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you" (Proverbs 25:21-22).

How do we deal with our enemies? The common understanding is that we get on the defensive and we protect ourselves and at opportune moments get aggressive and bring attacks as well. But the writer of Proverbs shares that we are to "bless" our enemies.

When dealing with adversarial individuals, we know that a negative spirit and energy surrounds the relationship. This spirit is draining and destructive to the individuals mind, body and spirit. One can become consumed by an adversarial spirit and it governs their whole life. This is not an empowering state, it is not productive and it does not glorify God.

The writer of Proverbs emphasizes the blessing of our enemies with God because the negative and disempowered state of an adversarial relationship is destructive to both individuals. We may be the one who has been "hurt "by an individual and have the right to be upset. But we can never hold on to the offense and allow our anger to develop an adversarial relationship. If we do this, we become victimized by the offense and the person.

The scriptures shares that vengeance is not ours, it is the Lord's. Paul shared that we should repay evil with good. In other words, do not allow destructive spirits to consume you and block your blessings. This is not a statement to say, become friends with your enemies and to invite them into your intimate circle--that would be foolish. But it is saying that don't allow someone else's issues to govern your life.
