Doing The Job No One Wants to Do!

"The Dung Gate was repaired by Malkijah son of Recab, ruler of the district of Beth Hakkerem. He rebuilt it and put its doors and bolts and bars in place" (Nehemiah 3:14).

Everyone wants the grand assignment that places them in a position of recognition. There is nothing wrong with ambition when it is tempered by the proper motivation and humility. Malkijah demonstrated this kind of spirit as he rebuilt the Dung Gate.

The Dung Gate was the gate where the trash was taken out and there was probally a dump nearby. It was clearly not the most glamorous point of entry or exit for the city. No doubt there was a constant stench which he had to contend with along with the insects that go along with the refuse.

Malkijah was from the district of Beth Hakkarem, which was the fire post for the city. Malkijah was a person of responsibility and some authority. But in spite of his position, he humbled himself to do what is perceived as a lowly assignment. I am convinced that Malkijah did not view the Dung Gate as a lowly assignment, but as a necessary and essential component in the rebuilding of the walls of his city. I believe he did it by looking at the larger picture of what he was contributing to.

Friends, there are times that we struggle with the perceived lowly positions that we have been assigned. We have to always remember that there is a bigger picture and a higher purpose that is at work in the universe. No matter how large or small our task we are contributing to rebuilding, renewing and restoring the walls and extending the Kingdom.

There is a blessing in doing the job no one wants to do for the cause of the Kingdom. Jesus shared, "and the last shall be first..." It is through our humility and service that we are elevated and blessed.
