""Next to him, Malkijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Inspection Gate, and as far as the room above the corner; and between the room above the corner and the Sheep Gate the goldsmiths and merchants made repairs" (Nehemiah 3:31-32).
Have you ever felt like something was not your job or responsibility? Of course you have! It may be that it was not something that you wanted to do, or it was something beyond your skill set and you felt emphatic that, "it is not my job!"
There is a great emphasis in the church world that surrounds spiritual gifts and abilities. Often time, many individuals fail to participate in the work of the church and projects, because they feel that it is not their gifting, which equates to it not being their job. When that happens the work of the church suffers because no one feels they have the ability to do the work of the Lord! Most often, I find it is more of an excuse to cover up the desire that they really don't want to do the work. If the Children of Israel would have felt that way, the walls of Jerusalem would have remained toppled and the city in ruins.
In the text, the artisans who were trained in specialized areas felt they could also play a role in the rebuilding of the walls. These men had every reason to not join the effort. After all, they knew nothing about building, they artisans. But they had a willingness to assist in the building of the walls. These men were willing to learn a new skill set and put their business on hold and invest in the rebuilding, restoring and renewing of the walls of Jerusalem.
What does this say to us this day? Are we willing to learn a new skill set that goes beyond our realm of comfort to rebuild, restore and renew communities and lives?
This is the question that we must grapple with.
Let me be clear, if it deals with the things of God,it is always our job because we are manifestations and expressions of God. How can we be a vessel to be used by God when we are setting the terms?
