"The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender" (Proverbs 22:7).
"The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the works of your hand. You will lend unto many nations but will borrow from none" (Deuteronomy 28:12).
Wherever there is lack and poverty there is pain and suffering. The scriptures do not share their is nobility in poverty. Jesus as falsely portrayed was not poor by the modern definition and perceptions of poverty.
The Covenant God made in Deuteronomy 28 is that we could have resources abundantly and would be lenders and not borrowers. This is not about MATERIALISM and conspicuous consumption, but it is about having resources to be a blessing to assist others. Through our resources we bring transformation!
The church reformer, John Calvin emphasized that Christians are to work as unto the Lord...in our working we create resources and influence in the society that we live in. Max Weber contributes the Protestant Work Ethic as the single most factor in the spread of Capitalism in the 1500-1600's which developed in the New World and formed the United States. Prosperity and Abundance is our nations birthright.
The writer of Proverbs is very clear, those who borrow are "SERVANTS" to the lender. Some translations render, "SLAVE"! The borrow dictates one's life and takes away personal freedom. It is no wonder that Paul shared, "own no man..."
Can it be that we have become so use to debt and feel that it is improbable and impossible to live without it? Could it be that we have become use to being a servant and cannot see life any other way? When one becomes debt free it is a liberating feeling and it releases your resources to invest in others.
