"So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn til the stars came our. At that time I also said to the people, Have every man and his helper stay inside Jerusalem at night, so they can serve us as guards by night and workmen by day. Neither I nor my brothers nor my men nor the guards with me took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water" (Nehemiah 4:21-23).
There is a price to pay for the achievement of a significant project. Many people think because they are inspired by God that there will be ease and no struggle. Where I am a big believer that most of the struggles that we have are self created and most often self sabotage, I do believe that when ever one moves in a positive direction, that movement creates friction. Big dreams will have big challenges, significant projects will have significant challenges.
However, let me be clear, it is not the challenge that is the issue here, it is whether or not one is willing to pay the price to overcome the challenge. Many at the first sign of struggle or challenge, back off and back down. They allow the challenge to stop them. In other words, they are not willing to pay the price to overcome the challenge.
When one is willing to pay the price, one develops an attitude of whatever it takes! The individual has a determination that nothing is going to stop him/her from achieving his or her goals. One who is willing to pay the price begins to stop looking at the problem, but finding a solution to the problem.
Nehemiah was willing to pay the price, and he was willing to do what ever it took to rebuild, restore and renew. Can you believe the working 24 hour shifts? Being on "alert" 24/7? Nehemiah and the people of God were determined to not let anything stop them from being successful in rebuilding the walls.
Are we willing to pay the price in the fulfilment of our visions and dreams? Are we willing to pay the price in the face of great adversity? There will be no prize with the willingness and determination to overcome the adversity of the challenges.
