"Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the wickedness of their fathers"(Nehemiah 9:2).
What is our response to the Word of the Lord? The Word of the Lord always requires a response. The children of Israel after hearing the Word repented from their sins. Matter of fact, they also repented from the sins of their fore-parents.
The Word of the Lord pricks our hearts and causes us to look honestly at ourselves. The Word of the Lord always confronts the individual and causes us to deal with where we are. The Children of Israel were confronted with their sin and apostasy of the past and present.
When was the last time that we were moved by the Word of the Lord to confront our lives? When was the last time we were confronted by the Word of the Lord to be more, to have more and do more? When was the last time we grappled with sin in our lives because of the Word of the Lord?
The Children of Israel had no problem with repenting after hearing the word. Repentance is more than just turning away from a behavior, Repentance is a change of mind. All behaviors are rooted within the mind, If I think it, I become it. Jesus shared, "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully had already committed adultery with her in his heart"(Matthew 5:28). Jesus shares that the "sin" begins with the intention of the heart and mind and not just the action.
Repentance is to "think again" to "think again" our beliefs and understanding of our old belief systems. Repentance is when I turn away from all of those old and negative thoughts and ideas and align myself with the Word of the Lord.
Has our response to the Word brought us to a point where we are honest with ourselves and have moved us to repentance? It is important that we are in a church were we are being challenged by the Word of the Lord to grow and be all that God would have us to be.
