Blessing Others

"They also will answer, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you? He will reply, I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me" (Gospel of Matthew 25:44-45).

Christianity is not just a personal relationship with others. We are called to be joined together in a love relationship with our community. Jesus shared that one of the most important commandments is that we love our neighbor as ourselves. However, our neighbor is not necessarily the person that looks and thinks like us. Our neighbor may be someone who is different from who we are and may be in need. Interestingly enough, Jesus shares the importance of reaching out to those who are in need.

I have been guilty of probably not being as sensitive as I need to be. I am an advocate of self-responsibility and hard-work. I have adopted a personal philosophy that "charity" at time is destructive because it takes away incentive. Help a person, but ensure that a person does not take advantage and become complacent with support from others.

However, we cannot escape the dictates of Jesus and our caring about others in need. He suggest that what we do for them, we do for him. I understand this in the context of wealth. When I am responsible with my wealth I can establish organizations and a plan of strategy to help those who are in need transcend their situation. That is why I believe it is vital for the church to have ministries that go beyond the sanctuary and bless those who are hurting and helpless.

What are you doing with your wealth? It may be in donating to an organization that provides food, clothing and shelter. It may be in helping out in a ministry that gives people a hand up instead of a handout.

I want to challenge you this day to do something to help someone else and demonstrate the Love of God.
