"For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven" (Gospel of Matthew 5:20).
Jesus was tough on the Pharisees in regards to their approach to the Word of God; however, he also had respect for their devotion and dedication.
In the sermon on the mount he shares with those who would follow that our righteousness must surpass the Pharisees and the teachers of the law. For the common person that was considered unthinkable. But Jesus was emphasizing that their "righteousness" or "right-standing" was based on a dedication and commitment. The Pharisees were very committed to their understanding of God and they gave themselves fully to their understanding. As believers our commitment and dedication must exceed the Pharisees.
What about your level of commitment and dedication?
